Kirat, the paranormal ability to manipulate matter through bio-electrical means, is a major cornerstone of Sarseian life that all Sarseians have the ability to perform. In use it is similar to the concept of Chi, Ki, or other ‘flowing energy’, also known as Okoti, and this ability is foundationally intertwined with an individual's personality.

The distance at which a Sarseian can perform Kirat greatly depends on the individual. The area of influence an untrained Sarseian can have on objects of a size greater than a cubic foot is approximately 5 feet (1.5 m) from the tips of their feelers, and the influence increases dramatically as the size of the object is reduced, up to 100 feet (30 m) for pebble-sized objects. This area of influence increases with training and the amount of Okoti that is being expended. While it is possible to expend Okoti to the point of physical collapse, there is a strong stigma against doing so, many believing that doing so may shorten one's life. Traditionally, a Sarseian must learn to manipulate their first domain entirely without training, giving themselves a concrete starting point. Further training is given through mentoring, which trains the individual in the disciplines of the six domains, training both their minds and bodies.

Kirat is a system, similar to a martial art kata, of movement of an individual's limbs, including the feelers, to transfer Okoti through different target Nodes, the sequence of Nodes determines its effect. There are no material or vocal properties. The training a Sarseian receives allows faster, more precise, and increased flow of the Okoti. A being that has found themselves on Sarsei will notice that the realm Sarsei resides in is completely cut off from all known deities, has no access to the Weave or other magical frameworks, and therefore other known magic refuses to work. Techniques and knowledge gained from other planes may help them pick up how magic works on this plane, but mages with no combat expertise would be at a distinct disadvantage by not having the fighting skills to compliment the magic that replaced their own.

Beings from another plane, known to the Sarseians as Outsiders, have access to Kirat due to the fact that all sentient, sapient beings from any plane have Sharinnah embedded within them at the time of their arrival, and while it is not known where these Sharinnah fragments originate, it is believed they form when first exposed to radiation from Kao and Raish, the Sarseian suns. For almost all Outsiders, the Sharinnah fragment absorbs the inert magic in order to grow to a proper size and material for them individually, and causes the Shari and Nodes to establish, allowing the Outsider access to Kirat as if they had always grown up with it, but with no knowledge on how yet to control their newfound abilities.

Sharinnah grown in this manner typically develop from nearby bones, usually high up on the body such as the head or back, and is always exposed to the air once fully formed. It has been documented to grow on already formed horns, claws or nails, teeth, scales, etc.

Anir - Magic of the World[edit]

Scattered sporadically across the planet are locations where magic gathers naturally. At these points, distinct magical effects of specific domains condense and crystallize, fusing into one or multiple small spheroids, called Anir. The magical effects can be grouped into six domains, and these domains deconstructively interfere with each other, so each Anir typically has one domain, though there have been extraordinarily rare documented cases of multi-domain Anir.

Anir crystals can be used in many ways. They can be used by Sarsei residents to restore their own personal energy and will 'recharge' over time. They can also be attached to various objects to imbue them with the crystal's properties. Finally, they can be ground to powder and added to objects, food & drink, or raw materials for temporary but powerful effects.

Agate Anir[edit]

Red-to-orange crystals that deal with molecular thermodynamics, causing shifts in temperature from low to high and back, even to the point of combustion.

Opal Anir[edit]

Iridescent crystals that cause unusual electromagnetic effects, everything from magnetic levitation to the ebb and flow of water by managing surface tension.

Quartz Anir[edit]

Translucent, tough with especially sharp corners as they are made from the energies of chemical bonds and the solid structures they create. This allows for the creation and reformation of atomic links and creation of solid-body structures.

Iolite Anir[edit]

Dark blue crystals, associated with the volume and pressure of various matter. These stones can increase and decrease the pressure of matter in the area, using that to manipulate the world around them.

Malachite Anir[edit]

Black-ringed green crystals, associated with the rise and fall of life energy, as well as the various forms a body can take. They can inhibit or promote growth and healing. The opposing polarity often causes hostility toward those who use them; while using them to heal is common and well accepted, using them to harm another person, while possible, is seen as taboo planetwide.

Heliodor Anir[edit]

Translucent yellow crystals which often have floating spots of light and dark surrounding them, dealing with photonic excitement and dampening as they do. This allows for illumination, concealment, and allowing solid structures to emit light.

Sharinnah - Magic of the Horn[edit]

Sharinnah are similar to Anir in that they form and grow over time. Where they differ is that Sharinnah, unlike Anir, specifically only grow on sentient fauna existing anywhere on planet Sarsei, and they are always a hybrid of two Anir domains. This allows the Sarseians and other species that come to the planet to create unique and creative effects using their will and the effects available by their Sharinnah. Typically, a Sarseian's personality determines the material of their Sharinnah, so one can usually tell what kind of personality a Sarseian resident will have based on their Sharinnah color. Sharinnah come in 16 different varieties due to the various combinations of the 6 Anir.

Diamond[edit]

Diamond has no domains and therefore can control all domains equally, and at a much stronger strength than the rest since they can draw energy from all domains. Diamond Sharinnah are exceedingly rare at slightly more than 1 in 2,000,000 individuals. These tend not to fit into any of the above specific categories, or to say, they do so equally.

DRAFT[edit]

Magic in this system is a biological function powered by solar radiation and governed by an innate three-stage anatomical mechanism. This system, called Kirat, enables individuals to absorb, store, and manipulate filtered radiation as magical energy, called okoti, through a process integrated with their nervous and muscular systems. It is not metaphysical or symbolic, kirat use is as physical and biologically constrained as respiration or digestion.

The first stage of the system begins with a pair of horns, called sharinnah, located on the top of the head. These sharinnah are composed of a gem-like biological material, called sharin, that filters incoming solar radiation according to the user’s innate domain attunement, which is determined by personality traits formed during development. The individual’s sharinnah makeup corresponds to one of sixteen unique filter types. Fifteen of these are based on every unique pairing of the system’s six kirat domains:

Agate (thermodynamics - controlling heat and phase change),

Opal (electromagnetism - magnetic and electrostatic forces),

Quartz (atomic bonds - reshaping material structures),

Iolite (pressure - affecting gas volume and compression),

Malachite (life energy - promoting, suppressing, or redirecting growth and decay), and

Heliodor (photons - controlling light, wavelength, and photon pathways).

The sixteenth type is a rare generalist filter, allowing access to all six domains at reduced potency. Sharinnah appearance is unique to each domain pairing and is used to visually identify a person’s capabilities, though no symbolic meaning is assigned to sharinnah shapes or colors beyond domain classification.

Once solar radiation is filtered, it enters the second stage: a network of biological energy nodes embedded throughout the body. These nodes serve three main purposes: storing energy, called okoti, converting it into usable kirat formats, and routing it between regions of the body. There are multiple node types, including reservoir nodes for long-term storage, catalytic nodes for converting filtered okoti into kirat forms, and relay nodes that handle directional flow and network management. All individuals are born with a baseline set of nodes, but through training or under extreme conditions (such as near-death experiences), additional nodes can be awakened. Awakening events expand kirat capacity or unlock unique effects without mutating the domains themselves. Okoti regenerates slowly over time through exposure to solar radiation—even reflected sunlight—typically requiring a full day to replenish a fully depleted system.

The final stage involves emission, which occurs through a pair of barbels, called furok: prehensile, boneless, muscular appendages located on the muzzle similar to an eastern dragon or catfish, in place of muzzle vibrissae. These furok are highly sensitive and essential for precise kirat output. They act as conduits that release the okoti shaped within the body, effectively allowing kirat to interact with the world. Furok cannot be retracted or replaced. If they are damaged or amputated, kirat ability is significantly reduced, although not entirely lost—the body can reroute okoti to alternate channels over time, but at a reduced efficiency. Protective gear such as sleeved armor is common in high-risk professions. Because furok are so sensitive, they also hold deep cultural significance and are often used in rituals, and in intimate contact.

Kirat cannot be cast passively. Instead, it requires deliberate bodily motion to direct okoti through the node network. These motion-casting forms resemble martial arts, where precise gestures, stances, and rhythms circulate and combine okoti from various nodes. The flow of okoti must be physically guided along anatomical routes toward the furok for release. Interrupting motion—through paralysis, disorientation, or physical restraint—prevents casting entirely. Forms differ based on individual training and domain pairing, but they all share a common logic: movement must match internal okoti flow to activate a kirat effect. Even in zero gravity, kirat remains functional, since what matters is muscular movement, not contact with the ground.

Each domain has clearly defined boundaries. For example, Agate affects temperature but not light or electricity, while Heliodor manipulates light but cannot create heat. Domain pairings create synergistic abilities—such as Opal + Heliodor allowing the creation of guided lightning or stealth through electromagnetic-light distortion, or Quartz + Malachite enabling regenerative tissue sculpting. These combinations allow each dual-domain type to develop a unique tactical and functional identity, while still adhering to fixed rules of energy, anatomy, and conservation.

Overuse of kirat results in physiological consequences as the system depletes or overheats. Early signs include greyouts, visual static, tremors, dry mouth, and muffled hearing. Prolonged strain can cause system-wide pain, mental disorientation, or collapse. These symptoms are recoverable unless node damage becomes permanent through extreme abuse. Despite these risks, node training and mastery of casting forms can dramatically expand one’s efficiency, power, and control.
